
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. Latifah was the second daughter of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her political and acting abilities as well as her knack for rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the title "delicate and sensitive" at the age of eight years old. Latifah began singing in the Shiloh Baptist Choir located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" as the character of Dorothy in a play of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mom was a major influencer. She was very aware of the students and the music. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was invited by Latifah's mother to perform at the dance. Mark the 45 King, to perform at a school dance.
